| I read one fable today. The story is as follows. :
A Fox had fallen into a well, and had been casting about for a long time how he should get out again, when at length a Goat came to the place, and wanting to drink, asked Reynard whether the water was good, and if there was plenty of it. The Fox, dissembling the real danger of his case, replied, ˝Come down, my friend, the water is so good that I cannot drink enought of it, and so aboundant that it cannot be exhausted.˝
Upon this the Goat without any more ado leaped in, when the Fox, taking advantage of his friend´s horns, as nimbly leaped out, and coolly remarked to the poor delued Goat, ˝If you had half as much brain as you have beard, you would have looked before you leaped.˝
After reading this story, I learned that ˝he lives insafely that looks too near on things.˝
나는 오늘 우화 하나를 읽었다. 그 이야기는 다음과 같다. :
우물에 빠진 여우 한 마리가 어떻게 하면 다시 밖으로 나갈 수 있을까, 한참동안 이리저리 궁리하고있었다. 마침 한 마리의 염소가 그곳에 나타났다. 그리고 물이 먹고 싶어져서, 여우에게 그 물은 맛이 있는지, 또 충분히 있는지를 물었다. 여우는, 자기가 사실 위험에 빠져 있다는 것을 감추고 대답했다.
˝여보게, 어서 내려오게나. 이 물은 아주 좋은 물이어서, 나 혼자서는 마시기 아까울 정도야, 그리고 너무 많아서 다 마실 수도 없을 지경일세.˝
그 말을 듣고 염소는 군말 없이 뛰어들었다. 그러자 여우는 염소의 뿔을 이용해 가지고 재빨리 밖으로 뛰어나왔다. 그리고는 아주 침착하게 속아 넘어간 가엾은 염소에게 말했다.
˝자네에게 그 턱수염의 반 정도만 되는 지혜가 있었다면, 뛰어들기 전에 좀더 조심했을 걸세.˝
이 이야기를 읽은 후에 나는 ˝사물을 너무 근시안적으로 보는 사람의 생활방식은 위험하다..˝라는 것을 배웠다.
